Do you love me enough to shoot me?

This is a sad, almost tragic, story of love. A 77 year old Italian man is under arrest in Italy for shooting his 82 year old wife in hospital bed. She’d been suffering from Alzheimer’s for the past eight years and he could no longer bear to see her suffering any more.

As I read the news story, it struck me that here was a man who loved his wife so much, that - despite being of advanced years himself - he still had the courage and the compassion to end her suffering. Yet, at what price? Whether he ends up being put in prison or not, he’ll still have to live with the knowledge that he killed the love of his life. However many times he tells himself that he did it for her, to release her from her suffering, there’ll be a part of him that will forever accuse him.

I hope that the Italian authorities show this man the same compassion that he showed his wife, and release him without charge. This was not a random shooting by some madman; he is not a danger to society and he won’t do anything like this again. Let him live out the rest of his life in peace.

True love is having the courage to do what this man did.
