Discrimination
Two stories have brought discrimination into the spotlight today. First is Lenny Henry saying that TV is too white and needs “affirmative action” to correct it (BBC). The second is Alan Sugar suggesting that discrimination laws are actually doing women a disservice (ITV).
As an able-bodied, heterosexual, atheist, white male my views on discrimination are automatically discounted by anyone that falls into what is commonly termed a minority group, but I would just like to ask three questions:
1. Isn’t “affirmative action” just discrimination in another guise? Isn’t telling someone they can’t have a job because they’re white just as bad as telling them that they can’t have it because they’re black?
2. As someone who may have benefited from positive discrimination, don’t you feel somewhat uneasy that you only got the job just to fill a quota?
3. What happened to employing the right person for the job - whatever their race, sex, age, ability or religion?

One Response to “Discrimination”
I think you know what to do....

IMO affirmative action policies are unreasonable, illogical and groundless. The way I view things is that people should be hired solely on job-related criteria.
In Canada affirmative action quotas have been a bust and it’s no wonder why that is. It’s just plain stupid to introduce a new form of discrimination to replace an old one.
However, try and tell that to the radical feminist contingent or to your politicians and what you get back is a lot of blithering foolishness aimed at rationalizing the irrational.
