Today’s song is King Creole by Elvis Presley

Well, he plays something evil
Then he plays something sweet
No matter how he plays
You got to get up on your feet

When he gets the rockin’ fever
Baby, heaven sakes
He don’t stop playin’
‘Till his guitar breaks

You know he’s gone, gone, gone
Jumpin’ like a catfish on a pole
You know he’s gone, gone, gone
Hip shaking King Creole
You know he’s gone, gone, gone
Hip shaking King Creole

Following yesterday’s realisation that it had taken so long to get a Creedence song on SOTD, it occurred to me that there hadn’t been any Elvis yet, either, so here we go.

I was always a big fan of Elvis when I was a kid and this song has been a favourite ever since I first heard it. It helps, too, that the film of the same name is one of the very few Elvis films that is any good. And, strangely enough, Vic Morrow not only stars in King Creole but also in Twilight Zone: The Movie, which is one of the two films that got me into Creedence.

Today’s song is Bad Moon Rising by Creedence Clearwater Revival

Hope you got your things together.
Hope you are quite prepared to die.
Looks like we’re in for nasty weather.
One eye is taken for an eye.

Don’t go around tonight,
Well, it’s bound to take your life,
There’s a bad moon on the rise.

Can’t believe its taken me two weeks to get round to including a Creedence song in SOTD. They are one of my all time favourite bands, after all.

Two films got me into their music. The first was Twilight Zone: The Movie. Their version of Midnight Special features in the opening sequence (you know, where Dan Ackroyd asks Albert Brooks if he wants to see something really scary). And the second was American Werewolf in London, where this song features in the transformation sequence.

Although only a short-lived band (1968-1972) Creedence created some of the most enduring songs in modern rock, and they did it with a unique sound. Instantly recognisable guitar sounds and John Fogarty’s amazing voice. If you’ve never taken a really good listen to their stuff, perhaps you should. If the Eagles were country rock, then Creedence is swamp rock - and it sounds mighty fine!

Today’s song is ‘Til The Morning Sun Shines by Chris Rea

I’ve taken so many
Turns on this road
I don’t know East from West,
North or South, which is best?
I will never know now
The best way to be

‘Til the morning sun shines
On my love
And me

Part of the epic 11 CD set that is Blue Guitars, this may well be the best song that Chris Rea has ever produced. A lilting melody with under-stated guitar work, and a lyric that yearns for the moment when the singer and his love can finally be together in the light of the dawn. Touching, poignant and hopeful.

Today’s song is Moondance by Van Morrison

Well, I wanna make love to you tonight
I can’t wait til the morning has come
And I know that the time is just right
And straight into my arms you will run
And when you come my heart will be waiting
To make sure that you’re never alone
There and then all my dreams will come true, dear
There and then I will make you my own
And every time I touch you, you just tremble inside
And I know how much you want me that you can’t hide

Always one of my all-time favourites and I was reminded of it by yesterday’s post about werewolves (this song features in American Werewolf in London). Another classic.

Today’s song is Werewolves of London by Warren Zevon

He’s the hairy-handed gent who ran amok in Kent
Lately he’s been overheard in Mayfair
You better stay away from him
He’ll rip your lungs out, Jim
Ha, I’d like to meet his tailor

Just an absolute classic song. I’ve always been a bit of a fan of werewolves (something to do with Jenny Agutter when I was young and impressionable) and this is such an upbeat, good time record. Love it.
