Today’s song is When Will You (Make My Telephone Ring)? by Deacon Blue
Pale blue eyes
Same old house, no ties
A little bit older, but not so
Worldly wise
That I can’t see
Your light’s on me
Making me regretfully say
The wonder of it all was you
And underneath it all it wasn’t true
I want you in everything, in everything
In anything I do
When will you make my phone ring
And tell me I can’t give you anything
Anything at all now
Raintown, from which this song comes, is up there in my list of all-time classic albums. There isn’t a dud song on there and you even get the delights of Chris Rea guesting on slide guitar on ‘Love’s Great Fears’. It’s an album that had to be re-released a couple of times before it really took off, but from the opening notes of Born In A Storm it’s class all the way.
For a long time ‘Dignity’ was my favourite track, but listening again to the album just recently I realise that this track - which shows off the plaintive quality of Ricky Ross’ voice to perfection - is the new favourite.
And Deacon Blue remain the only band that I’ve ever seen live at the Dome in Brighton. So, it’s sort of special.
