SOTD #47 : P & H Nights 3
Today’s song is Mustang Sally by The Commitments
I brought you a brand new mustang
It was a nineteen sixty five
Now you comin’ around to signify a woman
Girl, you won’t, you won’t let me ride
Mustang Sally, now baby (Sally, now baby)
Guess you better slow that Mustang down, alright
You’ve been running all over town
Oh, I guess you gotta put your flat feet on the ground
I know, I know, it’s a Wilson Pickett classic, but I like this version. This one is for anyone who remembers The Dead Fish Appreciation Society, Ivan Philips or asking “Do you do Mustang Sally?”when drunk.

Today’s song is Once Is Enough by Aerosmith
Been lucked out, broke a woman’s heart
With only myself to blame
Fate ran its course, I suffered a loss
I learned a lesson in pain
Cheated, lied, I took love for granted
Oh, I paid the price
I won’t last a night
I won’t make the same mistake twice
Once is enough, it’s one time too many
The changes are rough, ooh, once is enough
This is Aerosmith doing both kinds - country and western. And then deciding they don’t wanna play like that any more and rocking out. Very rare, so there’s no iTunes link today, but you will find a performance on YouTube, with Steven Tyler and a bemused looking Willie Nelson.

Today’s song is Ice Cream Man by Van Halen
Now summertime’s here babe, need somethin’ to keep you cool
Ah now summertime’s here babe, need somethin’ to keep you cool
Better look out now though, Dave’s got somethin’ for you
Tell ya what it is
I’m your ice cream man, stop me when I’m passin’ by
Oh my my, I’m your ice cream man, stop me when I’m passin’ by
See now all my flavours are guaranteed to satisfy
Hold on a second baby
I got good lemonade, ah, dixie cups
All flavours and push ups, too
I’m your ice cream man, baby, stop me when I’m passin’ by
See now all my flavours are guaranteed to satisfy
Hold on, one more
What can I say about DLR that hasn’t already been said? This is just a great, good time song which does that thing I really love - starts quiet and gets loud at the end. Excellent song which brings back many happy memories.
And we return you to your normal programme…
After the brief hiatus - caused by a malfunctioning keyboard which made typing a bit too much of a chore to bother with - The New Wolfs Howl, and Song of the Day, are now back on track.
I’ve back-dated yesterday’s post and today’s will be going up just as soon as I’ve written it. So, while you’ve had to wait a bit, you haven’t missed out on any of these great songs. Aren’t you the lucky ones?
Thanks for your patience during the technical breakdown.

Today’s song is Marlene On The Wall by Suzanne Vega
I walk to your house in the afternoon
By the butcher’s shop with the sawdust strewn
“Don’t give away the goods too soon”
Is what she might have told me
And I tried so hard to resist
When you held me in your handsome fist
And reminded me of the night we kissed
And of why I should be leaving
Marlene watches from the wall
Her mocking smile says it all
As the records the rise and fall
Of every man who’s been here
But the only one here now is me
I’m fighting things I cannot see
I think it’s called my destiny
That I am changing
Suzanne Vega’s breakthrough hit, way back in 1985. I remember watching a concert, filmed in London, where she described how she’d come to have the inspiration for the song; apparently, a late film with Dietrich was on the TV and she heard the dialogue before seeing the film - and someone told Dietrich “You have lead many men to death with your eyes”.
