Today’s song is Surf’s Up by Jim Steinman

The waves are pounding on the sand tonight
I want to take your hand and make it feel so right
I know I’m ready and I’ll never be like this again

And the sky is trembling and the moon is pale
We’re on the edge of forever and we’re never gonna fail
I know you’re ready and we’re runnin’ on the back of the wind

And my body is burning like a naked wire
I want to turn on the juice, I want to fall in the fire
I’m gonna drown in the ocean in a bottomless sea
I want to give you what I’m hoping you’ll be giving to me

And when the waves are pounding on the sand tonight
I want to take your hand and make it good and make it right
And now the sky is trembling and the moon is pale
We’re on the edge of forever and we’re never gonna fail, no

From the Bad For Good album, this is typical Jim Steinman fare in that it is tongue in cheek rock opera with a sometimes suspect lyric. And it’s great! I’ve always been a fan of Meat Loaf, but when I found this gem from the early ’80’s I realised that the best person to sing Jim Steinman songs is Jim Steinman himself. A lot of the stuff that appears on this album has been covered by Mr Loaf, but every time Steinman’s own version is the better one. Well worth several loud listens.
