Today’s song is If I Should Fall Behind by Bruce Springsteen
We said we’d walk together baby come what may
That come the twilight should we lose our way
If as we’re walking a hand should slip free
I’ll wait for you
And should I fall behind
Wait for me
We swore we’d travel darling side by side
We’d help each other stay in stride
But each lovers steps fall so differently
But I’ll wait for you
And if I should fall behind
Wait for me
Now everyone dreams of a love lasting and true
But you and I know what this world can do
So let’s make our steps clear that the other may see
And I’ll wait for you
If I should fall behind
Wait for me
Now there’s a beautiful river in the valley ahead
There neath the oaks bough soon we will be wed
Should we lose each other in the shadow of the evening trees
I’ll wait for you
And should I fall behind
Wait for me
Darling I’ll wait for you
Should I fall behind
Wait for me
I first heard this song on the (un)Plugged album, but for me the best version is on the Live in NYC set where vocal duties are shared with other members of the E Street Band, to make a song that is simply beautiful. If you thought Springsteen was all about the bombast and the shouty voice, then you need to listen to this track.

Today’s song is Seven Bridges Road by Eagles
There are stars
In the southern sky
Southward as you go
There is moonlight
And moss in the trees
Down the seven bridges road
Now I have loved you like a baby
Like some lonesome child
And I have loved you in a tame way
And I have loved you wild
Sometimes there’s a part of me
Has to turn form here and go
Running like a child from these warm stars
Down the seven bridges road
There are stars in the southern sky
And if ever you decide
You should go
There is a taste of time sweetened honey
Down the seven bridges road
I first heard this on the DVD of Hell Freezes Over, where it’s a bonus, audio-only track, and I was simply blown away by the sound of those harmonies.

Today’s song is Hallelujah by John Cale
I’ve heard there was a secret chord
That David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don’t really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Your faith was strong, but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you
To a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Baby I’ve been here before, I know this room
I’ve walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you
I’ve seen your flag on the Marble Arch
Love is not a victory march
It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah
There was a time you let me know
What’s really going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?
I remember when I moved in you
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Maybe there’s a God above, all I ever learned from love
Was how to shoot at someone who out drew you
And it’s not a cry you can hear at night
It’s not somebody who’s seen the light
It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Another Leonard Cohen song, and again one that is done better by other people (although, if you haven’t heard Cohen’s version, you should check it out). The song has been in the news recently because of the chart battle between the atrocious X Factor version and the Jeff Buckley version.
For me, though, the best version is done by Velvet Underground stalwart John Cale; his voice just suits the song better (Buckley’s voice isn’t rough enough) and the arrangement is perfect. If you’ve ever seen Shrek, it’s Cale’s version that you heard in the film

How dumb do you have to be….
…to dial 999 to complain that you got the wrong topping on your pizza? In what world could that possibly come under the heading of an emergency?
These stories come out periodically and it always astounds me the sort of thing that people dial 999 for. I would have thought it was a fairly simple thing to remember – 999 is for emergency use only – but apparently I’m wrong. To me, the wrong topping on a pizza, or not being able to get through to Strictly Come Dancing are not emergencies and you don’t need to dial 999; your house burning down, someone having a heart attack – these are emergencies and the 999 operators are there to help you.
But, as always, there is no accounting for stupidity, it seems.
Update: seems that if you’re a ’star’ whose biggest claim to fame is getting your tits out on Page Three, you also dial 999 to ask if you can drive on the hard shoulder of the M25 because you’re late for your panto.

Today’s song is Lavender by Marillion
I was walking in the park
Dreaming of a spark
When I heard the sprinklers whisper
Shimmer in the haze of summer lawns.
Then I heard the children singing
They were running through the rainbows.
They were singing a song for you
Well it seemed to be a song for you
The one I wanted to write for you
Lavenders blue, dilly dilly, lavenders green
When I am king, dilly dilly
You will be queen
A penny for your thoughts my dear
A penny for your thoughts my dear
I.o.u. for your love
I.o.u. for your love
Several years before their big chart successes with Kayleigh and Incommunicado, Marillion had a number of less successful but better songs out. This is my favourite.
