Stuff you should know

This page covers a few things that you should know about this blog, including guidelines for leaving comments, copyright and disclosure.

Credits

The strapline for The New Wolf’s Howl (In these hands, I’ve held the broken dream, In my soul, I’m howling at the moon) is from Testimony by Robbie Robertson.

…and a few words of thanks

.. to Wil Wheaton, who’s WWdN and WWdN: In Exile were the inspiration for me to get blogging. (Read more here).

.. to all those other bloggers that I read the most – CodeHappy, TechCrunch, Huffington Post and others – who’s posts continued what Wil had started and which help me to develop my own writing.

.. to you, Constant Reader, for being there for me to blog to.

Guidelines

Further to this post, I’ve come up with some guidelines to govern The New Wolf’s Howl.

  • I don’t expect you to agree with me all the time (or any of the time), but don’t expect me to agree with you either.
  • All posts made from today (17 April 2007) will allow comments, so if you want to comment, please do. Please bear in mind that all comments are moderated and Defensio-filtered and that anonymous comments are not permitted.
  • Please be civil; if you don’t agree with what I (or someone else) have said, tell me why. Don’t just be rude. Personal attacks on either myself or others will not be allowed and any such comments will be either edited or deleted.
  • Think about what you want to say, but also about how you want to say it.

Hopefully, if we all follow these few simple guidelines (which, lets face it, should be self-evident to most people), we can all gain from the experience. If you choose not to follow the guidelines, please remember that The New Wolf’s Howl is not a democracy – and the Wolf has big teeth!

Comments

As an extension of the guidelines above, I’ve also formulated a comments policy:

  • All new commenters are moderated: in other words, if you haven’t commented before, your comment will be held for administrator (me, in other words) approval. Once approved, all future comments you make with the same name and email address will be automatically approved.
  • Anonymous comments are not allowed: you must enter a name (it doesn’t have to be your real name, it can be your internet name) and email address. This is to try and keep the trolls out.
  • Be nice: you don’t have to agree with me or anyone else that comments on a post, but let’s not resort to silly name calling, shall we?

Please note that – even if automatically approved – I do reserve the right not to publish your comment. Should that occasion arise (it never has so far), I’ll email you and let you know why and perhaps ask you to re-submit your comment in a re-worded form.

Finally, please be aware that comments automatically close after 145 days unless I close them earlier than that.

Disclaimer

I’d like to make it very clear that The New Wolfs Howl is my personal blog. I write about many different subjects; some of those subjects will be related to the industry I work in or the company I work for. Nothing that appears on The New Wolfs Howl is endorsed or sanctioned in any way by my employer, nor does it represent their opinion on any subject. All opinions expressed in posts on The New Wolfs Howl are mine and mine alone.

If you have an issue with anything that appears on The New Wolfs Howl that you don’t feel comfortable discussing in the comments for the post concerned, please use the form that you’ll find on the Contact page. Please bear in mind that, as I run this blog in my personal time, it might take a little while for me to reply to you.

All opinions expressed in comments on The New Wolfs Howl are those of the individual commentator only.

Disclosure Policy

Up until today (4 August 2008) there have been, from time to time, sponsored posts on The New Wolf’s Howl. ALL such posts have been clearly identified (with something obvious like “This is a sponsored post”) and they will remain on the site. However, from today and until further notice no further sponsored posts will be appearing. I’ve decided that I just don’t have the time and resources (or, currently, the desire) to put in the effort that is required for sponsored posts.

I have also removed the Google Ad box and Entrecard widget that used to appear in the sidebar. These will not be re-appearing for the foreseeable future.

There are links to the company that I work for, both on the “Also see…” page and, if it’s relevant, in some of my posts. I don’t earn anything from these links; I believe in the products that the company I work for sells (I use them myself) and want to give you the chance to check them out. That’s all.

From 1 January 2009, each day’s SOTD will be accompanied by a link to Amazon Downloads. I take part in the Amazon Associate programme, so if you end up purchasing from them after following one of my links I will earn a commission. I do not earn anything from your clicks, though.

Any Amazon links that exist on posts made prior to 1 January 2009 are just ordinary links and not part of the Associate programme.

The New Wolfs Howl is currently not accepting any other advertising.

Basically, if you want to use any of my stuff be polite and ask. This may not be great work on a par with War And Peace or Romeo And Juliet, but it is my own and I cherish it. Please don’t abuse it by stealing it and passing it off as yours.

Thank you.
