Today’s song is Where Do You Think You’re Going? by Dire Straits

Where do you think you’re going?
Don’t you know it’s dark outside?
Where do you think you’re going?
Don’t you care about my pride?
Where do you think you’re going?
I think you don’t know
You got no way of knowing
You got no place to go
I understand your changes
Long before you reach the door
I know where you think you’re going
I know what you came here for

Just because it’s Mark Knopfler’s birthday today, I thought I’d make SOTD one of the best (and hardly ever heard) Dire Straits songs there is. Enjoy.

Today’s song is Better Days by Bruce Springsteen

Well my soul checked out missing as I sat listening
To the hours and minutes tickin’ away
Yeah, just sittin’ around waitin’ for my life to begin
While it was all just slippin’ away.
I’m tired of waitin’ for tomorrow to come
Or that train to come roarin’ ’round the bend
I got a new suit of clothes a pretty red rose
And a woman I can call my friend

These are better days baby
Yeah there’s better days shining through
These are better days baby
Better days with a girl like you

The Boss again (I think he may crop up a few times on SOTD), this time from the Lucky Town album. A great song, and very appropriate because these are better days, with a girl like you.

Today’s song is Highway to Hell by AC/DC

No stop signs, speed limit
Nobody’s gonna slow me down
Like a wheel, gonna spin it
Nobody’s gonna mess me round
Hey satan, paid my dues
Playing in a rocking band
Hey momma, look at me
I’m on my way to the promised land

I’m on the highway to hell

One of the greatest rocking songs ever. From the opening chopping guitar licks, this song deserves to be turned up to 11. Kick start your day with a little bit of AC/DC.

Today’s song is Possession by Sarah McLachlan

Listen as the wind blows
From across the great divide
Voices trapped in yearning
Memories trapped in time
The night is my companion
And solitude my guide
Would I spend forever here
And not be satisfied

And I would be the one
To hold you down
Kiss you so hard
I’ll take your breath away
And after I’d wipe away the tears
Just close your eyes dear

The acoustic version of this song that appears on the Due South soundtrack (and as a bonus track on the Fumbling Towards Ecstasy album) is a simply beautiful song. McLachlan’s plaintive voice and emotional lyrics turn this simply arranged tune into an emotional triumph. If you’ve never heard it, then you’ve never heard one of the top five best songs ever.

Today’s song is Ride Forever by Paul Gross

So I say to all you old men, don’t let yourself get broke
If you think the world’s gone crazy
And it’s scratching at your throat
It’s time to dust off that old saddle, get it on a horse
Kick up your spurs, we’re gonna run like stink
We’re gonna tear across these blue Alberta skies

We’re gonna ride forever
You can’t keep horsemen in a cage
Should the angels call it’s only then
I might pull in the reins.

Paul Gross played the lead in one of my all-time favourite TV series, Due South, and this song comes from the episode All The Queen’s Horses. In the version that’s in the show, there’s a guest appearance from Leslie Nielsen which doesn’t do the song justice but the studio version is a tour-de-force of a song that starts gently and quietly and builds to a rousing and rallying climax. A real feel good song that deserves to be played loud.
