You’re never too old
It all started with the WI in Rylstone in 1999 - getting your kit off on a calendar to raise money for charity. The Rylstone ladies have gone from strength to strength - raising over £1 million so far, having a hit Hollywood film made about their exploits, etc - and many groups have followed their example since.
The latest is Ancaster Athletic, a children’s football team in Lincolnshire. Not satisfied last year with getting the men in the village to pose for a calendar, the team has this year roped in the ladies of the village - including some of the mothers of the players and the wife of the coach - and scooped the big headline.
Nora Hardwick, who will be 102 next week, has posed behind the bar of the local to become Miss November. And let me tell you, she doesn’t look a day over 78!
Brief notes
1. You’ve got to feel sorry for Paul Robinson after last night’s England vs. Germany match. He got caught out by a cross that turned into a shot that turned into a goal and this morning he’s got David James leaping to his defence. That’s David James, possibly the worst goalkeeper the English national side have ever had.
2. Did you know an iMac can resurrect your CD’s? I’ve got an original (1995) copy of the Pulse double CD set by Pink Floyd (you know, the one that had the little flashing light in it) and some while ago the last three tracks of disc two became unplayable. No obvious damage to the disc - just wouldn’t play, in whatever machine I used. Just tried importing it into iTunes and it did it with no problems. What’s more, I’ve been able to use iTunes to make a new CD to replace the one that doesn’t work anymore. Just another reason to buy a Mac!
3. If you’re a woman of 40 or over and live or work in the New York Metropolitan area, head on over to Marianna’s blog; she’s looking for people to help her with a survey as part of her Masters degree. It’s all online and will only take about 10 minutes to complete. Tell your friends.
4. For all you environmentalists out there, check out Skimmer’s blog for 20 top tips for going greener. Some of them you’ll probably already know, but others will not be so obvious. And some of the facts and figures he presents will scare you. Seriously!
5. Eastbourne Borough FC remain unbeaten so far this season, throughout all the pre-season friendlies and the league matches they’ve played. Go Borough!
Up the Borough!!
Football* has never really been my game, probably because I was never any good at it at school (anyway, we were a rugby school really), but I’ve caught the odd game over the years.
I’ve always thought that the local, non-league game is a much better example of the genre than the big league sides because the guys who play locally really want to play. The best match that I ever saw was in around 1987 / 1988 when Newhaven’s local side played host to an Allstar XI captained by the legend that was Georgie Best. Of course, George played everyone else off the field (even at that stage of his career and health), but the Newhaven guys really gave it all they could - for the love of the game.
And it’s that same love of the game that drives the players of Eastbourne Borough FC - many of whom come from many miles away for training and matches. Which is why I’m so proud to be part of the company that is this season sponsoring the away kit for the team. As part of an effort to put something back into our local community, Health Plus is supporting the team not only with a cash sponsorship, but also with free supplements for all the first team players.
And to show their thanks for this help, the boys done good in their first pre-season friendly, by beating Sussex County Division One side St. Francis Rangers 3-2! Excellent result and well done to all the guys.
If you’re local to Eastbourne, why not come along to Priory Lane on Thursday 2nd August when the first XI will again be in action - wearing their new, Health Plus sponsored away strip - against Hastings United. It’s sure to be a great match - kick-off’s at 7.30pm. See you there!
*or soccer if you’re American. How you can call rugby for pansies (what’s with all the padding and constant stopping?) football is really beyond me.
