Today’s song is Brain Damage by Pink Floyd

The lunatic is on the grass
The lunatic is on the grass
Remembering games and daisy chains and laughs
Got to keep the loonies on the path

The lunatic is in the hall
The lunatics are in my hall
The paper holds their folded faces to the floor
And every day the paper boy brings more

And if the dam breaks open many years too soon
And if there is no room upon the hill
And if your head explodes with dark forebodings too
I’ll see you on the dark side of the moon

The lunatic is in my head
The lunatic is in my head
You raise the blade, you make the change
You re-arrange me till I’m sane
You lock the door
And throw away the key
There’s someone in my head but it’s not me.

And if the cloud bursts, thunder in your ear
You shout and no one seems to hear
And if the band you’re in starts playing different tunes
I’ll see you on the dark side of the moon

The closing track from Pink Floyd’s seminal classic Dark Side of the Moon. If you’ve never heard this before, where the hell have you been? If you have heard it before, go and listen to it again.

Today’s song is Get Over It by Eagles

It’s like going to confession every time I hear you speak
You’re makin’ the most of your losin’ streak
Some call it sick, but I call it weak

You drag it around like a ball and chain
You wallow in the guilt; you wallow in the pain
You wave it like a flag, you wear it like a crown
Got your mind in the gutter, bringin’ everybody down
Complain about the present and blame it on the past
I’d like to find your inner child and kick its little ass

Get over it
Get over it
All this bitchin’ and moanin’ and pitchin’ a fit
Get over it, get over it

I’ve had this floating round in my head for most of the day, because I’ve been toying with writing a post about personal responsibility in modern society. This rocking little number could almost be the theme tune!

And this song does contain one of my most favourite lines ever - I’d like to find your inner child, and kick its little ass! Brilliant stuff.

Today’s song is 99 Luftballons by Nena

Hast Du etwas Zeit für mich
Dann singe ich ein Lied fuer Dich
Von 99 Luftballons
Auf ihrem Weg zum Horizont
Denkst Du vielleicht grad’ an mich
Dann singe ich ein Lied fuer Dich
Von 99 Luftballons
Und dass sowas von sowas kommt

99 Luftballons
Auf ihrem Weg zum Horizont
Hielt man fuer UFOs aus dem All
Darum schickte ein General
Eine Fliegerstaffel hinterher
Alarm zu geben, wenn es so war
Dabei war da am Horizont
Nur 99 Luftballons

99 Duesenjaeger
Jeder war ein grosser Krieger
Hielten sich fuer Captain Kirk
Das gab ein grosses Feuerwerk
Die Nachbarn haben nichts gerafft
Und fuehlten sich gleich angemacht
Dabei schoss man am Horizont
Auf 99 Luftballons

Tired of the Cold War? Worried that one day we’re all going to get wiped out by some War Games piece of software? Never mind, write a catchy little song about it and get everyone dancing.

Apologies for any errors in the German text (I copied it from here), but I’ve always preferred the original German version to the English translation. It just seems to fit the tune better.

Today’s song is Heaven by Chris Rea

I see a turning wheel
On a dusty track
Caught in the void and empty space
In between there and back
And the paradise of going somewhere
That’s still so far away
Happy, boy you bet I am
Holding on to this smile for just as long as I can

Heaven

It’s all bright in front
And it’s all dark behind
Living for the now that’s in between the bridges
And the signs
And getting there is still a long long way to go
While the others dream and wish,
This is everything I officially need to know
Happy, boy you bet I am
Holding on to this smile for just as long as I can

Heaven

I took a walk along the seafront today, in the warm autumn sunshine, to clear my cold-stuffed head and to stretch my legs. I took my music player along and, on random play as it always is, it served me up this gem of a song from 1991’s Auberge album. And as I walked along, enjoying the sunshine and thinking about the past weekend, I realised that yes, heaven indeed!

Today’s song is Lonely At The Top by Randy Newman

I’ve been around the world
Had my pick of any girl
You’d think I’d be happy
But I’m not
Everybody knows my name
But it’s just a crazy game
Oh, it’s lonely at the top

Listen to the band, they’re playing just for me
Listen to the people paying just for me
All the applause and all the parades
All the money I have made
Oh, it’s lonely at the top

Listen all you fools out there
Go on and love me-I don’t care
Oh, it’s lonely at the top
Oh, it’s lonely at the top

I was just watching an excellent BBC Four Session with Randy Newman and while he played some of my favourite of his tracks, he didn’t play my all-time favourite, so I thought I’d put it up as a SOTD.
