The NHL season, though just started, has had its fair share of notable performances.

Young Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews could not have started the year hotter. He has a league leading ten goals and the league lead in points in sixteen. Teammate Morgan Rielly sits close behind him with thirteen points. They will try to lead the Leafs back to the playoffs with a developing young core. Toronto faces off against the Blues. St. Louis, 1-2-2 in their first five games.

“Auston Matthews is a top ten player in the league and he is proving it,” junior Blake Haffer said.

The most impressive goalie in terms of goals against average thus far has been New Jersey’s Keith Kinkaid. He has a 1.00 goals against average, which means he, on average, allows a goal in every game he starts. He is leading the charge on what has been an undefeated 4-0 start to the Devils’ season.

“Keith has had a good start to the season, but I think Quick is still the best goalie in the league. In the coming months the stats will even out,” junior Ethan Seymore said.

The league lead in plus minus is a two way tie between Sebastian Aho of the Carolina Hurricanes and Dylan DeMelo of the Ottawa Senators, who are both plus eight. The Hurricanes are 4-2-1 so far on the young season, while the Senators have a similar record at 3-2-1. Both of the teams are rebuilding, so seeing their young players perform well so early on is a great sign for their future. The Hurricanes face the Avalanche Saturday and the Senators matchup against the Canadiens on saturday as well.

“The young talent is a good sign for both of the teams. They could look to win a Stanley Cup in a couple years,” Junior Adam Polly said.

The NHL season has just begun, but many players have impressed.
