The Cardinals and Paul Goldschmidt have agreed on an extension.

Last month, Paul Goldschmidt became the highest paid player in St. Louis Cardinals history, agreeing to a five-year, $150 million extension. Both the yearly salary and the total contract amount eclipsed Matt Holliday’s $120 million contract and Yadier Molina’s $20 million annual salary. Ken Rosenthal was the first to report the deal.

“For the production he brings, the contract is a steal,” junior Sophia Giltner said.

Of his seven full seasons in the major leagues, Goldschmidt has only had an fWAR below 4.9 twice. During that span he peaked at an fWAR 7.2 and his lowest was 2.7, in his first full season. Over the course of his career, he has a wRC+ of 144, meaning his offensive production was 44 percent better than the league average. He has never won a Most Valuable Player Award, however he finished second two years ago. Having compiled 36.5 fWAR in his career, he has the second highest mark on the Cardinals, only behind Molina.

“He is one of the best players the Cardinals have had in quite a while,” junior Jacob Justice said.

In Arizona, Goldschmidt was the Diamondbacks’ cleanup hitter. However, in St. Louis, he will slot into the two-hole, with Ozuna batting fourth. Thus far, Goldschmidt has performed 35 percent better than the league average in St. Louis, through ten games.

“Goldschmidt hitting second doesn’t seem like a good idea, but it could end up working out,” junior Emma Giltner said.

The Cardinals are 9-6 to begin the season, currently in a series with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
