Cardinals Farm System Update

The Cardinals farm system have had a month of games under their belt, and thus far, through the five levels that have played, there are some clear standouts.

In Memphis, the highest level of the minors, shortstop Edmundo Sosa is off to a good start. Sosa is batting .338 with two home runs and 10 RBI. Sosa is seemingly adding some bat to his previously defensive first game, and with him being on the 40 man roster, Sosa could see big league time very soon. Number 24 prospect Jake Woodford is also on a tear in Memphis. The young right hander has pitched 30 innings over five starts, and has only surrendered four earned runs, each of them coming via a home run. The only downspout to Woodford is that he has had issues with walks, leading Memphis in that category.

Moving on down the line to Springfield, 20 year old Dylan Carlson has continued his impressive spring training into early season. Carlson, the Cardinals 6th ranked prospect according to mlb.com has batted .287 and knocked out four home runs over his first 24 games. Like Woodford, however, Carlson has had a bit of a struggle with the strikeout, going down that way 19 times thus far. 25 year old Anthony Shew joins Carlson as the standout pitcher in Springfield. Shew has seen good results since recently putting thrusted into a full time starter role, as shown this season. Through his first five starts, he owns a 1.93 ERA, through 28 innings pitched, and has even kept his walk numbers down, and his strikeout numbers up.

In Palm Beach, 2018 28th round draft pick Justin Toerner is on a tear. The outfielder has batted close to .400 through his first 20 games, .388 to be exact, and has added a bit of power, hitting as many home runs this season through the first set of games as he did last year. As for a pitcher, it is difficult to find just one, as the team collectively has held a 2.11 ERA over 24 games. Both Johan Oviedo and Angel Rondon have held ERA’s just under two through their first five starts, and both being just 21 years of age, the pair could have a strong push through the Cardinals system this season.

Finally for the Peoria Chiefs, two starters have stuck out, much like Palm Beach. 21 year old Diego Cordero would be the story, as he has pitched four starts and 25 innings, and has held an ERA of 1.46. But Tommy Parsons, 23, has absolutely dominated his batters faced. Parsons has pitched 30 innings, only given up 11 hits, and one run allowed, which puts his ERA at a very low 0.30. As for hitters, both top prospect Nolan Gorman and first basemen Brady Whalen have put up similar numbers. Both have hit .325 through their first 20 games, but Gorman has topped the home run categories with six, and Whalen has hit three.

These 11 players are helping their cases to get themselves to the big leagues sooner than their fellow teammates, and we could see any one of them in the big leagues by the end of the 2019 season.
