Billie Eilish: Amazing

A review

Her songs have been streamed more than a billion times. She is selling out large venues all over the world. She has even performed at Coachella alongside some of the biggest pop stars such as Beyonce and Ariana Grande. Most astonishing of all: Billie Eilish is only 17.

With her increase in popularity, Eilish is guaranteed to have haters saying that she is “overrated,” but she has proved multiple times in her short career that she has a striking voice, thoughtful lyrics and a unique style that brings listeners into her mind.

Eilish also has a striking appearance: purposefully dead eyes, hair dyed in shades of somber blue or pale purple and a soft, yet creepy, voice that makes her unique in the crowd of boring, repetitive pop stars who sing about the same two things: breakups and partying.

Lead vocalist of Nirvana, Dave Grohl, expressed his appreciation for Eilish, saying “The connection she has with her audience is the same thing that happened with Nirvana in 1991. … People say, ‘Is rock dead?’ When I look at someone like Billie Eilish, rock and roll is not close to dead!” in a Tweet.

Eilish’s music builds not only on the paths of artists like Lorde, Lana Del Rey and Sza, but Odd Future, Frank Ocean and Post Malone. She is an artist-as-creative director, building her own layered universe for fans to obsess over through a unified flow of music, videos, social media and staging.

There are certain things people do not like, but not liking something for its popularity is idiotic. If you do not like musicians like Billie Eilish because they are popular, then you are missing out on a lot of talent.

Instead of assuming music is bad because it is popular, try it out. It never hurts to listen to something and see if you like it. People will always judge, but maybe opening our hearts a little more instead of closing our minds is the answer, not just in music, but in life.
