Late starts are great for teachers, and especially students. Late starts allow students to either sleep or have extra time to do homework in the morning, they also make the school day go by faster.
Sleeping in on late starts allows students to catch up on missed sleep and allows students to feel more energized for the whole week. Starting school later also has proven an increase in cognition and memory, students can learn better and drive to school safer during late starts.
With classes only lasting 30 minutes students may have less instruction time, but it makes the day feel shorter and keeps kids alert by changing classes faster than normal.
According to the CDC, Students aged 13 to 18 are recommended to get eight to ten hours of sleep and adolescents that don’t can get symptoms such as being overweight, symptoms of depression, engage in unhealthy risk behaviors such as drinking, smoking tobacco, and using illicit drugs, and perform poorly in school.
Having late starts at least twice a month not only helps prevent this but allows regular start time and length school days to still be an everyday thing.
Schools in the WSD should not start at a later time everyday, but have a late start every two weeks is great.
