“Co-curricular programs are defined as those activities that enhance and enrich the regular curriculum during the normal school day. Extracurricular programs are defined as those activities that broaden the educational experience which usually take place beyond the normal school day,” according to Amazon Web services.
Barbershop club was created this year by Senior Jaden Duree. He created the club after attending Acappellooza and found inspiration in barbershop music.
“It’s to spread that love of music in a different way than we typically see at a highschool level,” Duree said.
Duree talked to choir teacher Angela Castelli to begin the process of club creation.
“Hey Mrs. Castelli, I want to get more barbershop music into our setting, and it just kind of spiraled from there.”
Many teachers who sponsor the clubs enjoy the subject of the club, English teacher Katie Baltz who has co-sponsored the crochet club for about five years. Baltz said she started sponsoring the club with social studies teacher Katie Harris after picking up on interest from students about learning crochet.
“I think the more involved you are in a school activity whether it’s a sport or a club, the more you’re going to want to show up, and just showing up is half the battle,” Baltz said.
Senior Abby Westhoff who has been an active club member since her sophomore year enjoys reaping the benefits of her hard work, such as last year in Junior Class Officers when she helped to decorate prom and then got to attend the event in a setting that she had influence in.
“It’s just nice to be able know that you can give back to a place you’re at all the time, because so many kids complain all the time about what happens around them but with clubs you can kind of change and manipulate that which is really nice,” said Westhoff.
If you would like to start a club at THS you can contact athletic director Todd Hayes, as well as a faculty member as a sponsor to begin meeting.
