After losing their seniors from last season the varsity girls basketball team has the same goals and ambitions for the 2023-2024 season.
The girls basketball season started the last week of October and will end in March according to girls head coach Brad Schellert.
“My favorite part about game days is the atmosphere and the anticipation you get, especially in the home game atmosphere,” sophomore Knia Graham said.
This year, the girls have eight home games in the regular season, with 20 games overall.
“What motivates me on the court is my teammates. They really hype me up and keep me going,” Graham said.
There are 28 girls on the basketball team this year, including varsity, JV and freshman.
“My teammates motivate me, because they always push me to be better, and when I’m doing bad, they pick me up. I love my teammates so much. They are the best ever, and I wouldn’t have anybody else,” junior Alysse Lamb said.
The girls practice five days a week depending on games and tournaments according to Schellert.
“They come to practice every day and work hard, so I think we’re doing okay. I know they are ready to play games and not have to listen to me at practice every day,” Schellert said.
“The goal this year is to do well in conference and get to the district championships. We have the talent to do it and it’s always nice to play for a trophy,” Schellert said.
Depending on tournaments, the team can play up to three games a week.
“I think students should come to the girls basketball games, because I think we’re good. I don’t know what other people might say but I think we’re good,” Lamb said.
November 27 to December 2 , the team went 2-1 in the tip off classic tournament, only losing to Ft. Zumwalt East.
Graham said she thinks everyone should come out and support, because the girls basketball team is a good team to be around.
“For whatever reason, at every school, the boys get a bigger crowd, and I don’t think the girls deserve it. The games are back-to-back, and I know the girls love having that crowd. It makes them play harder. You guys need to come to watch the girls play. They are a good group and they work hard so come watch them play,” Schellert said.
The next girl’s varsity game is January 18 against Troy.
