Financial responsibilities is taught at THS beyond just in business classes.
Students can be fined for unreturned library books, textbooks or sports uniforms, unpaid purchases, as well as damage to these and other school-owned items. Library fines however, will only be charged if a book is not returned for a significant amount of time.
“They’ll start getting emails about what the book costs to replace,” librarian Elizabeth Faron said.
If a chromebook or its cord is lost or mangled beyond repair, without insurance, this will result in a fine. Uninsured chromebook leasees will also be charged for broken screens and keyboards. Damaged chromebooks can be brought to room 221 for repairs by students in the chromebook repair class.
“It’s not very often that we actually have to charge anything. I think a lot of students believe they’re going to be charged, but they’re not,” business teacher Carrie Seiler said.
Students can see any fines on their account by going to the “Fees & Billing” tab on SIS K-12.
Fines can be paid to financial secretary Janelle Weicht in the main office. She can also accept the return of some items. It is also possible to meet with an assistant principal to develop a payment plan.
“You just have to make that initial attempt to go set [the payment plan] up to show you’re in good faith,” principal Dr. Kyle Lindquist said.
Consequences for unpaid fines can include not being allowed to attend school functions, such as prom, being denied a parking pass and not being allowed to walk at graduation.
