The boys basketball season is quicking progressing to their last regular season home game, Feb. 20 against Parkway South.
The varsity players worked hard during this season, and according to Coach Kyle Deweese, the team’s goal is to focus on one game at a time.
“I love competition, so I enjoy that aspect every year… but I enjoy getting to see the excitement that the kids that are playing do, because I was that guy a long time ago,” DeWeese said.
Most of the players have been playing since they were little, allowing the team to grow close.
“Everyone has gone to someone’s house before as a team, and it was pretty fun. We all get along, and most of us hang out outside of school together. Everyone is really positive with each other,” junior Jacob Aydelott said.
The team currently has a record of 13-7 as of early February according to MSHSAA. With all of these wins, the team enjoys each other’s company both on and out of the court.
“It’s really fun. We all play video games together outside of school,” junior Mason Carroll said.
DeWeese said he decided to become the boys basketball coach because he likes being a part of helping players enjoy what they love.
“When kids hit milestones, that’s always really cool to see. Out of all the things I played as a younger kid, [basketball] was the one that I gravitated to the most. There’s so many strategies done in the game that makes it really fun to be a part of,” DeWeese said.
Some of the boys said they like to get food or listen to music to hype themselves up before their games. Activities like this allow for the formations of memories beyond just winning or losing.
“Getting my first dunk. I worked really hard for that, and once I got it, it was a really good feeling,” Carroll said.
