The track and field team makes up approximately 10% of Timberland’s student body
The team is split between 19 different events, seven field and 12 track events according to head Coach Timothy Woodson.
“You can be big, small, fast or slow. There’s something that pretty much anybody can come out for track and find something to compete in,” Woodson said.
Track is an open sport anyone can join. The team is like a second family in track according to sophomore Dillon Meyer.
“My coaching method would be…just trying to be as hands on as possible with every single rep that they get, so making sure that in the limited time that we have we can maximize every rep and get the best result possible,” throw coach Isaiah Winklemann said.
Meets can last anywhere from 2:45 p.m. and end anywhere from 4:00 to 4:30 p.m. JV meets happen during the week mainly on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with Varsity meets generally on Fridays. Saturday meet timing has been cut down significantly from last year. This schedule is subject to constant change and may be different from week-to-week according to Winkelmann.
“I do enjoy the competitions even though they are several hours long. It’s fun, because once you’re done with your event you can go to your friends’ event and cheer them on and it’s just a really good experience,” sophomore Erika Mullen said.
All of the interviewed track participants said that their events were completely manageable with homework and academics. The only requirements for being a part of the team is having passed six classes the previous year and passing the same number in the current semester Coach Woodson said.
“Sometimes, it’s a lot because I’m running upwards of 30 miles a week which can be very hard on your body and just getting enough sleep because you’re tired. But normally practice is done by like 4:00 pm so I’m home by around 4:10 pm so then I can just relax and do my homework, so it’s pretty manageable,” junior Cienna Genta said.
