The girls tennis team finished the regular season with a record of 10-2 on September 29. As a result, they will perform in a higher GAC spot this tournament.
“My expectations are pretty high. I have a wonderful group of young ladies, so goals are to compete for GAC, individual and team competitions and see how far we can go in districts both individual and team to win as many matches as possible and play some good tennis,” coach Kevin Porter said
According to Porter, outside of tennis the team often practice on the track. If it rains, they watch videos and learn about the mentality of tennis.
“I’m looking forward to definitely finishing off my season really strong and hopefully medaling in singles and in doubles so I can end my season really strong,” senior Isabella Baker said
One of the challenges of the season is only having eight courts and over 36 girls practicing, according to Porter.
Baker plays on varsity.
“My advice is to come out and try your best and always keep an open mind. You’re not going to be the best your freshman year, but I promise it’ll take a couple weeks, and you’re gonna get so much better, really fast,” Baker said.
Porter also said the team works to bond together.
“We eat a lot, we sometimes hangout, we go to watch and see the football games. Sometimes we’ll hangout on the weekends and play tennis,” junior Lily Lemons said
And, according to Porter, since tennis is a lifetime sport, some players take personal lessons, or play outside of school to stay in shape and learn more about the sport of tennis.
GAC Tournament games took place September 30 and October 1 and according to MSHSAA, districts start on October 12.
