The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Mike Trout are finalizing a record-breaking contract extension.

The new deal will be the largest contract in North American Sports history. Trout is set to make $420 million over the next twelve years. In addition to being the largest contract in the sport’s history, it is the highest annual salary ever given. He is set to make around $36 million annually from his contract, which is a little over Greinke’s yearly salary.

“Just a couple weeks ago Harper had the biggest contract ever, and now Trout does. Two insanely talented players getting rewarded,” junior Blake Haffer said.

Trout has a laundry list of accomplishments. He is a seven time All-Star, winner of the Rookie of the Year Award, two Most Valuable Player Awards, two All-Star Game Most Valuable Player Awards, six Silver Sluggers, and has been named the best overall defender, receiving the WIlson Overall Defensive Player of the Year award. Only entering his ninth MLB season, he has accumulated a fWAR of almost 65. His offensive production has been 72 percent better than the league average throughout his career, according to his 172 career wRC+.

“He is the best player in the league and it is not even close. He is criminally underappreciated,” junior Ethan Seymore said.

At the age of 27, Trout will be under contract until his late 30’s. He has led the league in on base percentage plus slugging percentage in three of the last four years, he was injured in the year where he didn’t lead. In terms of OPS+, a stat that weighs his OPS against the league average and sets it at 100, he has led the league in OPS+ in four straight seasons. Throughout those four campaigns, he averaged an OPS+ of 183, which is 83 percent better than the league average.

“Trout is a cheat code. He leads the league in major offensive categories year in and year out. He is stuck on the Angels though, so he may never be on the national stage,” junior Ethan Markovich said.

Trout will be under contract through the 2021 season.
