Track and Field in the Off Season
February 5, 2020
Track and field is defined as a sport that includes athletic contests based on the skills of running, jumping and throwing. At THS, track and field conditioning began January 8.
“I go to the off season conditioning to get in shape because I am always out of shape before track,” junior Kara Hildebrand said.
Hildebrand also said she participates in track conditioning, because it helps her get in shape and she enjoys being able to hang out with her track friends at the practices. Sophomore Tyler Berndt has similar expectations with off season practices that consist of conditioning by running and lifting.
“I go to the off season practices so I can get a leg up against my teammates and get better than them,” Berndt said.
According to the University of Rochester Medical Center, it is important for athletes to do a lot of resistance training and stretching in the off season to build basic muscle mass and range of motion. Coach Justin Shiroma said he also thinks that it is important for athletes to attend the off season conditioning so that they are building their strength and they can focus more on skills during the season.
“The whole team can have a bad day but individuals can have a great day, and that’s what I love about track,” Shiroma said.
Conditioning is every Monday through Thursday after school. Track events include sprints, distance, and relays, while field includes jumping and throwing. Questions? Email Coach Woodson or Coach Shiroma.
