Handling severe weather is tough for any school district. This school year, schools across St. Charles County have been trying to make the right decisions to ensure the safety of students and staff due to the winter  weather the area is experiencing. 

When it snows, St. Charles County prioritizes main roads over neighborhoods. This means that although main roads are safe to drive on, some might still not be able to exit their subdivisions, causing more school cancellations. In some cases, the County Highway Department will work around the clock with 12 hour shifts, trying to clear roads before the next school day. 

Although many students like to be able to stay home on a snow day, some students actually dislike snow days. This is because of the Wentzville School Districts snow day make-up policy. The calendar for the 2019-2020 school year did not include days for inclement weather, therefore, the amount of snow days will be added to the end of the school year, causing students to go later into their anticipated summer. 

“It’s nice to relax and catch up on homework, but it stresses me out knowing that I’ll get out of school later because of the snow days,” junior Kaitlyn Mcconnell said. 

So far, the Wentzville School District has implemented 5 snow days and 1 late start due to inclement weather. This will cause the last day of school to move from May 22 to May 30. 

“We already go more days than required, I don’t know why we have to go even more days at the end of the year because of snow days,” sophomore Lindsay Rehme said. 

Although students will have to attend school longer than expected this year, it is obvious that the safety of students and staff is taken into account in the Wentzville School District.
