Senior athletes at THS recollect their high school years and share how participating in sports has impacted their lives.
“My favorite thing about being a part of sports here is definitely the family atmosphere because I have so many friendships and relationships I’ve [made] through the sports, and I see myself carrying those to college with me,” senior Gabrelle Tucker said.
One of the many accomplishments of the athletes of the class of 2025, the girls soccer team won their 2025 conference championships. But, according to activities director Todd Hayes, it is not just about the wins.
“Hopefully, those seniors take away that they had a good experience. That’s one of my major goals in high school activities, is for kids to have a great experience,” Hayes said.
Approximately 135 seniors participated in THS sports this year, with fall sports having the highest participation.
“My favorite sport to play this year was basketball. Our basketball team was very good this year, and it was just very fun. We won a lot of games, and we played in a lot of big games; it was really fun. The atmosphere was great,” senior Austin Humphrey said.
Balancing sports and schoolwork can be really challenging, but being a student always comes before being an athlete, according to Humphrey.
“There’s proven studies that show kids who are involved in their schools achieve at a higher rate. It doesn’t always mean everyone, but in general, students involved in a club or a sport achieve at a higher rate,” Hayes said.
According to Tucker, participation in sports throughout high school improves students’ social lives and helps them feel more comfortable in school.
