Should Hats be Allowed in Schools?
December 22, 2017
Hats are a debatable topic in many schools; some allow headwear during school hours while others do not. Some schools and officials think hats are disrespectful, a distraction and sometimes a danger.
The formal thing to do when entering a church, house, school, or public place, is to take hats off. It is a sign of respect and courtesy, so they should not be allowed in schools, according to the Washington Post.
According to the Wentzville School District, hats are not allowed because they can be dangerous. Hats can cover the appearance of students faces and can make them unrecognizable.
However, hats in school should not be seen as a distraction and do not change the focus of students. Hats are a way of self expression and should not be considered much more.
Based on a poll, 79.5% of Timberland students say that hats should be allowed while 20.5% say they should not.
Hats are fashion statements and can be used to make an outfit. It allows students to feel comfortable in school and not always judged. Students can use them to cover up a bad hair day or simply keep their heads warm in the winter.
There is also the fight about different religions and their head pieces. Whilst hijabs and other religious headpieces are allowed in Timberland, other headwear is not allowed. Some schools ban headwear altogether, not allowing Muslim or Arabic religions not wear their hijabs in school premises.
Inappropriate slang and logos on hats should obviously be banned, but a simple beanie, snapback, visor or baseball cap should be allowed. As well as the right for religions to practice their beliefs anywhere they please, without the worry of it bothering others.

I think hats should be allowed in school as well it makes no sense to not allow this. Hats can we dress coded and after reading everything I will be making a petition along with friends to make hats allowed in our school.

I agree totally to allow school students to wear hats if they please along with administration and teachers if they please. Sometimes you just don’t feel like fixing your hair and so your confidence in a bad hair day and a hat day is a big deal sometimes especially with middle schoolers and their confidence and the weird puberty things they are going through sometimes my son just wants to hide under a hat because he’s shy which I don’t agree with but he feels more relaxed and comfortable when your relaxed and comfortable you can learn better. The whole reason behind not being able to wear a hat I have done my research and it keeps going back to an adequate thing and being disrespectful. The way the world is today the last thing we need to be nitpicking is kids wearing a little cap on their head to school. I mean I don’t know about everybody else but if that was the only concern I had in my life I would have it Absolutely made. If you get offended by a hat then I think you need to question yourself and look into yourself a little bit more because it’s definitely not the hat somethings going on within yourself. The disrespect thing honey when you took God out of school you lost the respect. And I don’t think any kid wearing a hat to school is an any way shape or form trying to disrespect or be disrespectful two teachers or Administration. It’s simply a choice like wearing a scarf or a vest or a belt. I’m going to throw a hat on my head today cause I’m having a bad hair day. No disrespect. None probably taken. The dates back to the mid evil times. I mean come on people let’s pick up the pace here let’s pick up the progress. Let’s be happy that everyone’s confident in himself not to feel disrespected or offended by a measly old let’s make a change and let’s bring on the hats and start your own petition in your schools see if we can’t get one for the students. And have hat day by golly whenever you want to.

I think hats, and specifically bandanas, should be allowed in school. I always have a buzzcut because having a lot of hair annoys me, so I normally wear bandanas on my head to express myself instead. I like making my own with different fabrics. I always wear a bandana now whenever I’m in public, and I am a lot more comfortable when I wear one. The school I go to has a ban on bandanas, hats, hoodies, etc. because they are a distraction, the affiliation with gangs, and other things already mentioned like respect and recognizability.
I am in marching band, and during band camp over the summer, there were several other people who wore bandanas and other hats. Hats were allowed since we were out in the sun. The hats and bandanas weren’t really distracting, and no one really ever had trouble focusing on marching because of them. Baseball caps can be used to shield your face from the sun, and as a way to express yourself. They don’t block anyone from seeing the teacher or the whiteboard, and aren’t unusual enough to really warrant the attention. Bandanas can be used to keep someone’s hair out of their face, improving vision and focus, and also can’t really block anyone’s view. They are like headbands in that sense, and those don’t normally get banned. They aren’t attention grabbing enough for someone to really be distracted from their studies, either.
As for the affiliation with gangs, literally any clothing can be affiliated with a gang, hats and bandanas aren’t special. Then there is respect, which I honestly couldn’t care less about. I respect my teachers as educators and people I learn from, but in my generation at least, we don’t normally show respect by not wearing a hat or bandana. I show it by paying attention during class, remembering a teacher’s birthday and giving them a gift, by wishing them a good day when I leave their class, or by thanking them and showing my gratitude at the end of the year. When it comes to recognizability, the matter is pretty simple. People who I haven’t seen in two years were still able to recognize me even when I was wearing my bandana. It, and hats, are just like any other clothing item, part of an outfit. If a teacher isn’t able to recognize a student when they wear a slightly different outfit, I think that is the teacher’s issue, not the students’. It is hard to recognize students at the beginning of the year as well, but teachers eventually figure it out, and most of the time, students don’t get all that mad because a teacher can’t remember their name or something at the beginning of the year.
Another argument someone might use is that hats and bandanas could be used to cheat or sneak things into school. While it is true that I have held things in my bandana before when I had nowhere else to put it, examples being my mask, my dot sheet in marching band, etc., there are ways to prevent cheating that way and reaching up to your head and fumbling around for a piece of paper or something to cheat isn’t exactly subtle. It should also be mentioned that things can be sneaked in through many other, more convenient methods, like your pants’ pockets, sleeves, backpack, etc. It is unreasonable to ban hats for that.
In my opinion, hats and bandanas should be dresscoded like other clothing. Inappropriate phrases and imagery are banned, anything completely covering up the face isn’t allowed, and maybe have consequences if you are found to be sneaking things into school. A complete ban is disproportionate to the usefulness and value of the clothing, and the actual minor risks involved. Sorry this ended up being kind of long.

thanks for this comment I cited you in my editorial about hats in school lol

OK, all this makes sense but when I interviewed our school superintendent about the matter one of his reasons for the ban on hats was they can show gang membership.
what…
so can a shirt, bracelet, MASK, pants, shoes, etc. Even a certain color of certain apparel can show gang membership.
and when they say there can be inappropriate symbols and signs on the hat. Well, how do we deal with inappropriate symbols and signs on a shirt? WE DRESS CODE!!! You can dress code a hat too.

Plus some people just feel comfortable with hats, not needing to fix your hair… and while doing tests people also say that you can have wandering eyes and cheat… ever heard of dividers? I think you should be able to wear hats
Denver • Mar 2, 2021 at 1:18 pm
People say students kind hide their identity with hats and hoods… but people can literally just say show me your face XD it’s as simple as that.

Well in some sense we should be aloud to where our hats but when does the line cross at because i think about that like what should be on the hat or what shouldn’t

I am with all of you
Jess • Feb 4, 2021 at 1:41 pm
Hats are a way for students to express themselves. For some, it’s even to feel more comfortable. If we are allowed to wear hoodies, socks, and bandanas, we should be allowed to wear hats and hoods too!

Hello to everyone that might read this, I am in Grade 8, everybody is having a hard time this year ngl we are almost all having the same feels . My school Has allowed Hoodies but not Hats so its kinda dumb ngl. the reason they allowed hoodies were that we are all stressed and sometimes we have our off day so they allowed it, but They can’t allow Hats for the same reason so i agree with some people that said HATS AND HOODS SHOULD BE ALLOWED.

Leora • Dec 12, 2019 at 8:37 pm
Hats, hoodies, and bandanas should be allowed.

I think students should be allowed to wear hats and have their hoods up in school. Its unfair that we cant have hats in school. I once got yelled at because i was wearing my beanie inside and it got taken away.

hats are the best for when you feeling down and then you put your hat on and it makes you feel a little better just like when your wearing
hoods they just are comfortable
