Are Athletes Paid Too Much?

Josh Calloni, Reporter

Sports are a very common way of entertainment, and like all entertainers, the athletes get paid, but, are some over paid, and on the other hand are some underpaid?

All professional athletes are paid, some much more than others, the top paid athletes for 2018, as of now, is Cristiano Ronaldo, LeBron James, Lionel Messi, Roger Federer, Kevin Durant, Andrew Luck, Rory McIlroy, Steph Curry, James Harden, and Lewis Hamilton. The top 10 has a different composure of every sport, two of which are from soccer, one from golf, one form tennis, four from basketball, one from auto racing, and from football. The top 10 are paid a total 623.7 million dollars, or on average, 62.37 million a year, according to forbes.

However, that is just from the pay, players also get endorsements and winnings. For example, Ronaldo gets paid 93 million a year from his team, but gets an additional 58 million from winnings, and 35 from endorsements. That totals up to about 186 million dollars a year. Even when you subtract taxes, that’s a lot of money.

However, you have to consider the talent of the players, the best players will get paid lots of money, and if you think about it, they do earn their large salaries. The highest paid sport is soccer, as Ronaldo takes that, being paid 93 million a year. For football, Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr gets paid 25 million a year. Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw is paid the most for baseball, at 33 million a year. Stephen Curry is the highest paid NBA player, at 34.5 million a year, and for hockey, the least highest paid sport, Jonathan Toews makes 16 million a year.

In my opinion, I think athletes are paid a good amount, of money for their skills, and deserve their pay for entertaining us, the fans.
