Cardinals Early Spring Training Breakouts
March 8, 2018
Now a week and a half into games, spring training is in full swing, and the Cardinals are facing a lot of tough roster decisions as of now.
The obvious early breakout is Yairo Muñoz. Muñoz is a utility player with ability to play all over the diamond. So far this spring, they’ve played Muñoz at right field, second base, and shortstop. Muñoz has hit 7 times out of the 15 plate appearances he’s received, including two home runs in the same inning against the Orioles, the second leaving the stadium. Muñoz would knock Greg Garcia out of the main infield reserve role.
Another player with a hot spring is Jose Adolis Garcia, going five for twelve, one of those hits being a tape measure home run to left field against Mets reliever Marcos Molina. He’s the brother of former Braves third baseman Adonis Garcia, and was signed out of Cuba last spring. He had a big year in the minors and is battling with Harrison Bader and Tyler O’Neill for the fourth outfield spot.
As for pitching, John Gant has forced his way into an already crowded bullpen race, so far pitching five innings, striking out nine, which means he is striking out an amazing 60 percent of his outs. Gant would try to force out one of the relievers that are able to go down to the minors, Matt Bowman, John Brebbia, or Dominic Leone.
Definitely with a lot of spring left, there is a lot of other players to watch out for, but these three headline that list.
