Cardinals Take on Pirates in Series Finale

Josh Calloni, Reporter

The Cardinals will stay in Pittsburgh for the second and final game of the short early season series tonight, April 4, with the game starting at 6:15 local time.

The Cardinals, who are off to a 2-3 start will send Opening Day starter Miles Mikolas to the mound against Pirates ace, Jameson Taillon. St. Louis is coming off of a huge comeback effort win in Monday nights game, and will look to carry that momentum into tonight. That game, which lasted 11 innings and a total of five hours in time, saw a lot of oddities. The Cardinals were left to utilize gold glove catcher Yadier Molina at third base after Matt Carpenter was ejected in the 10th. Molina had never played the position before, but did not see any fielding opportunities in his one inning there. Starter turned reliever John Gant was the only remaining bullpen reliever left come the 11th inning, and trotted out from the bullpen to earn his first save in his career.

As for tonight, the Cardinals will hope for a Mikolas bounceback, who was uncharacteristically roughed up by the Brewers on opening day, allowing five runs. On top of this, Marcell Ozuna and Dexter Fowler will look to return to the lineup, which is yet to be released, after departing from Monday’s game with injuries.  Both Kolten Wong and Paul Goldschmidt, both of whom are off to hard starts, will look to extend their early season power surges, with fair chances to do so. Wong, who has hit .500 with three home runs through five games, is only batting .154 off of Taillon, but Goldschmidt has hit the righty around for a .333 average.

The game in Pittsburgh will be the last game on the road for roughly a week, as the Cardinals return to Busch Stadium for the first time since last season for the home opener. The Padres come to town for that one, and game time is scheduled for 3:15 Thursday, though with impending weather, the game could be pushed back till Friday.

Tonight’s game will be televised on Fox Sports Midwest, which will also carry the pre-game show, starting at 5:30.
